Salvatore M. Iuliano, ’51

Salvatore Mario Iuliano, 92, passed peacefully Memorial Day, May 30, 2022. Sal was born January 3, 1930, to Frank and Maria Iuliano, who emigrated through Ellis Island from Sicily. He grew up in the Ridgewood section of Brooklyn, NY, the son of a Barber and a Homemaker. Sal proceeded to attend The Citadel Military College of South Carolina where he studied Chemistry, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1951. He later served as First Lieutenant in the Army during the Korean War.

Salvatore met Sandra Nancy Leto in East New York, Brooklyn, and married in 1956. They started their family on Jefferson Ave., Brooklyn welcoming son Frank, and daughter, Maria, later moving to the NJ suburb of Emerson. With a new job as a Chemist for Lever Brothers Corp.in Edgewater, Sal’s thirst for learning never ceased. He went on to achieve two Masters degrees, one from Columbia University and another from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He also attended Drexel University in Philadelphia and began working for some of the top Pharmaceutical Companies throughout the country.

Sal’s humble roots were also quite entrepreneurial. He invested in a bar, The Adam’s Apple in Cliffside Park, a neighbourhood pub close to his job at Lever Bros. But the bar business interfered with family time and that was unacceptable for Sal. After a long career at Lever Bros., he elevated to management roles for Becton Dickinson, Johnson & Johnson and ultimately retired from Searle Pharmaceutical. As a Manager in Compliance Audits, he traveled the world, working with the FDA in establishing safety protocols for various drugs and food products. He packed up his family through these job transitions and journeyed to Raleigh, NC and back, ultimately ending his distinguished career in Chicago,IL. He later moved, retiring closer to his family in Hamburg, NJ. He lived on the fairway of the 9th hole at Crystal Springs Golf Course and drove the ball, his own golf cart, and played and played and played.

Salvatore was a dedicated, devoted, and dynamic father. Saturday mornings, while listening to his beloved Opera, he led the charge to clean the house. Simply, with this he taught the meaning of hard work while sharing an appreciation of culture. Salvatore cooked and cleaned and sang and read, played sports, devoting all his energy to his children.

But most of all, Salvatore skied. Salvatore M. Iuliano was an avid snow skier, a Jean Claude Killy of his time. He began skiing while in the Army. In Korea, rumour has it, he strapped on some boards and headed down the hill. That was the beginning of a love of the sport for a Brooklyn boy who excelled at handball.

In order to have provide an opportunity for his family to ski, Sal took a second PT job at Fischer Ski Corp., Teaneck NJ. On most winter weekends, he would pack the Chevy Impala with the ski equipment he picked from the garbage bins at Fischer Ski Corp., and drive the family of four to the nearest mountain with snow. He taught his family the meaning of love of sport, of nature, and most importantly, love of each other on this journey. He later went on to ski just about every Adirondack, Laurentian, Rocky, and Alp. He was daring, caring and at times extreme, but skiing was his life.

Family was his other great love and he will be missed deeply by all, especially his wife, Sandra, son Frank and his wife Ruth, daughter Maria and her husband Brian, as well as his beloved grandchildren, Sara, Conor and Kate, Elyse and husband Dan, Jessica and husband Kevin, and his great-grandchildren, Myla, Rylee, Theodore and Julian. He is also survived by his loving brother and sister-in-law Alfonse and Alice Leto, his nieces and nephews, and all of their children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved sisters, Ninfa and Katherine.
