Roberta Erlene Merritt Greene, known by all as “Bobbi”, age 80, of Walterboro, entered into rest eternal Thursday morning, December 11, 2025, at Prisma Health Baptist Hospital in Columbia.
Bobbi was born on August 20, 1945, the daughter of the late Willard Earl Merritt and Florence Orner Merritt. As the daughter of an Air Force officer, Bobbi lived in California, Bermuda, Ohio, New York, Texas, and Germany. She attended General H.H. Arnold High School in Wiesbaden, Germany (Class of 1963), the University of Pittsburgh (B.A. in Sociology), and The Citadel (M.A. in European History, earning her degree while working full-time). Bobbi was actively involved in her children’s activities as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, assistant soccer coach at the Colleton County Recreation Commission, classroom volunteer, and member of both the PTO at Colleton Preparatory Academy and the PTA and School Improvement Council in Colleton County public schools. Bobbi was a member of the Magnolia Garden Club and the Colonel Joseph Glover Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She worked for the law firm of Smoak, Moody, Buckner and Siegel for seventeen years and taught European history at USC-Salkehatchie from 1995 through 2012. She was a faithful member of Saint Jude’s Church, where over the years she was active in many aspects of the church’s work. She was an avid golfer, a sport she enjoyed with her husband, Arnie, and was a member of the St. George Country Club. For many years, Bobbi enjoyed hosting an annual Christmas drop-in for friends and neighbors, adding new “favorites” each year for guests. Above all, she was a beloved mother and wife, and family was most important to Bobbi.
She is survived by her husband, Arnie, to whom she was married for 59 years. She was very proud of, and is also survived by her children: daughter, Christine Greene Young of Columbia; her son, Fire-Rescue Chief David Greene of Walterboro; her son-in-law, Michael J. Young; her daughter-in-law, Joey Bozard Greene and her three grandsons, Ryan M. Young and Braden T. Young of Columbia and Alexander E. Greene of Walterboro. She is also survived by her sisters Patricia Hull of Johnstown, Pennsylvania and Pamela (Charles) Crochet of Cheyenne, Wyoming, four nieces and a nephew and their spouses as well as great nieces and nephews.
Bobbi also considered the men and women of Colleton County Fire-Rescue as part of her family and for many years prepared an annual meal for them on September 11th and supported them with snacks and drinks on large fires. To all of her family and friends, she would say, ‘Do good, and remember I will never be farther away than your lips in prayer, your mind in thought, and your heart in love.’
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to friends and neighbors for their love and support over the years, especially to long-time special neighbors Sheri and Dell Miles, Billie Shoupe, the Godwins, Alysa Travis, and the Walters and to caregiver Alva “Cha Cha” Gadsen.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be considered in Bobbi’s memory to the following: Saint Jude’s Church, 907 Wichman Street, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488; or to, The American Stroke Association, 6405 Metcalf Ave #214, Overland Park, Kansas 66202 – or donate at: www.americanstroke.org.
