Richard Rollin Clarke, of HIlton Head, a distinguished individual who left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him, passed away on June 4, 2024. Born on July 22, 1940, to the late Rollin and Barbara Clarke, Richard led a life full of dedication, honor, and service to his country and community. Richard’s educational achievements were exemplary, having graduated from the prestigious US Army Command and General Staff College, showcasing his commitment to continuous learning and growth throughout his lifetime. His insatiable thirst for knowledge was evident in all aspects of his life. A man of great valor and integrity, Richard served with distinction in the military, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve as the Public Affairs Officer of the 120th Army Reserve Command. His contributions did not go unnoticed, and his leadership was an inspiration to many. Additionally, he held the esteemed position of past commander of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla, further solidifying his dedication to serving his country. In addition to his military service, Richard’s professional journey was equally remarkable. He devoted 33 years of his life to The Citadel, where he began his career in public relations before transitioning to procurement. His commitment to excellence and unwavering work ethic shone brightly throughout his tenure at this esteemed institution. Richard’s list of accolades does not end there; he was a man of diverse interests and pursuits. As a past president of East Cooper Kiwanis and past commander of Charleston Sail and Power Squadron, Richard gave back selflessly to his community. His involvement in organizations such as the Washington Light Infantry showcased his passion for camaraderie and shared experiences. In addition to leaving behind a legacy of honorable service and unwavering dedication to those causes he held dear, Richard is survived by a loving family who will forever cherish his memory. While we mourn the loss of such a remarkable individual, we also celebrate a life well-lived-a life that touched countless hearts and inspired all those around him. Richard Rollin Clarke’s presence will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His spirit will continue to live on in the memories of those who had the privilege of crossing paths with him. May he rest in eternal peace knowing that his impact on this world was immeasurable. He is survived by his children, Christopher Clarke, Curtis Clarke and Caroline Clarke.
