Robert Gordon Slagle, of La Jolla, CA, passed away on May 24, 2017 in San Diego, California ten days after suffering a stroke. As a third generation medical doctor, Bob graduated from the Citadel Military College of Charleston, South Carolina and the Ohio State University Medical School. He later served for three years as a Captain and physician in the United States Army and was based at the US Army Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. After saving the life of a critically injured woman at the side of a German autobahn, Bob received one of the highest medals given by the German government. Following service in the Army, Bob practiced as a plastic surgeon in Cincinnati, Ohio for thirty-four years. He was the founder and president of Cincinnati Plastic Surgery Associates where he mentored many of today’s foremost Cincinnati plastic surgeons. He was on the medical staff at several hospitals in Cincinnati including the Bethesda North Hospital, the Christ Hospital and the former Our Lady of Mercy Hospital. After retiring in 2002, he served for five years as the President of the Ohio State University Medical School Alumni Association. The oldest child of three to Jean Brown Slagle and William L. Slagle, MD of Dayton, OH, Bob is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Judith Jones Slagle; his three children Susan Slagle Marsh, Tom Slagle and Doug Slagle; four granddaughters, Sara Shimp, Amy Jacobs, Tori and Cameron Marsh; a brother-in-law Tom Jones, a son-in-law Steve Marsh, two nieces, Julie and Melanie; and four nephews, Dodge, David, Scott and Randy. During his career, Bob donated his surgical abilities to hundreds of people in the Cincinnati area. He particularly enjoyed Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, serving as a volunteer surgeon to the Cincinnati Shriner’s Hospital for burn victims early in his career. He also volunteered for several years as a surgeon at hospitals in Lima, Peru and Corazal, Belize, repairing the cleft lips and palates of indigent children. Bob was also a major donor to the Ohio State Medical School, Bethesda North Hospital, and other charitable organizations. A gentleman farmer for many years growing avocados on property near San Diego, Bob also grew and cultivated orchids, collected ancient coins, was an avid outdoorsman, skier and fly fisherman, and became an accomplished painter. To his family, friends and colleagues, Bob—affectionately called Pop-Pop by his grand-children— was beloved for his sense of humor, playful antics, intellectual curiosity, compassionate nature, loyalty, and passion for teaching. Bob was someone who tried to practice what he believed: that the truest measure of a person is not in what he or she receives, but more importantly in what he or she gives. A memorial service will be held at the Gathering at Northern Hills Church, 460 Fleming Road, Cincinnati, OH 45231 at 1:30 PM on Saturday, July 8, 2017.
