LTC Robert E. Beckwith (US Army, Ret), 83, passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2018. He was born in Sanford, FL on October 20, 1934. He began his military career at the Citadel, Charleston, SC, before receiving an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated in 1957. LTC Beckwith served in the Vietnam War and earned numerous medals, including the Bronze Star, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign and Service Medals, and the Combat Infantry Badge. After retiring from the Army, he was employed by Virginia Power (now Dominion Energy) as Emergency Planning Coordinator, Nuclear Operations Department. LTC Beckwith is predeceased by his father, Arthur H. Beckwith, Sr., mother, Jennie C. Beckwith, and brother, Arthur H. Beckwith, Jr., all of Sanford, FL. He is survived by his wife, Colleen D. Beckwith; son, Robert L. Beckwith; daughter, Karen B. Parker (Russell); grandson, Forrest R. Parker and two nephews. A graveside service with full military honors will be held on a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Altmeyer Funeral Home-Denbigh Chapel in Newport News is assisting the family with arrangements.
