Captain Robert A. Steers, age 88, passed away May 17, 2025, of natural causes. He attended The Citadel Military College of South Carolina and through ROTC was 1st Lieutenant-Executive Officer for Charlie Co. Upon graduating, Steers entered the U.S. Air Force and flew B-52s. After leaving the service he flew for Pan American, which at that time included Air Force One, where he met President Gerald Ford. For 11 years Steers was a councilman for his hometown in New Jersey. After Pan American, he flew for six other airlines, ending with Spirit. After aging out as a pilot, Steers instructed new pilots there. Upon retirement from the airline industry, Steers worked his dream job, part time for hardware stores in his area.
To remember the good times are his wife, Gloria Skeele, three children, Glenn, Scott and Donna, thwo stepchildren, Gwynne and Gary, 13 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, his brother, Bill, and lots of family and good friends.
Services will be at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Little Silver, N.J., on August 2, 2025.
