Richard Preston Richardson, 87, died September 1, 2010 in Winchester, Mass. Born on June 6, 1923 in Onley, Va., a son of the late Richard and Catherine (Nottingham) Richardson. Resident of The Gables in Winchester since November, 2008, previously lived in the town of Onancock, Va. for 20 years in retirement after leaving his longtime home in Concord, Mass. Husband of the late Jane Lee (Alexander) Richardson. He attended college for two years at the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., where he attained number one in his class, before being an appointment to the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md, in 1942. Mr. Richardson graduated With Distinction from the Academy with the Class of 1946, and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy. During his 13 years active duty in the Navy, Mr. Richardson served as an officer on cruisers, destroyers, amphibious ships, and aircraft carriers; he was head of department on several of these commands, instructed in Navy school, attended numerous officer schools in technical subjects and earned an MS degree in operations analysis at the US Navy Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif., in 1954. He then served as an operations analyst in a Navy scientific laboratory and on two operational staffs, before retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 1958. His civilian career included professional positions at LTV Aeronautics in Dallas, Texas providing operational support for the US space program, the institute of of Naval Studies in Cambridge, Mass. and Westinghouse Electric Corporation where he was manager, Advanced Studies Group. Mr. Richardson returned to government service in 1973, joining the Operations Research/Systems Analysis Office of the US Army Natick Laboratories. Mr. Richardson received several special awards from both government and industry for his technical achievements at Natick Laboratories. Mr. Richardson served as the acting chief of the ORSA Office in 1981 and was the Director of the Advanced Systems Concepts Directorate until his retirement from the US Army Natick Laboratories in 1987. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Jane Lee (Alexander) Richardson and by his brother, Thomas Richardson of Wachapreague, Va. Survived by his children; daughter Kathleen W. of Winchester, Mass., son Preston T. and his wife Barbara of Winchester, son J. Scott and his wife Emily of Wilmington, Mass., son Stephen A. and wife Lisa of New Orleans, La. and his six beloved grandchildren; Grayson, Preston, Jared, Thomas, Catherine and Phebe.
