Lieutenant Colonel Richard “Mac” Alfred McClain, a proud veteran of the United States Army, passed away on the morning of February 15, 2024, in the comfort of his home and surrounded by the love of his family. The son of James Ingram McClain and Alfreda Perkins McClain, Mac was born on July 23, 1932, in Grand Junction, Colorado. Mac is preceded in death by his mother, father, and wife, Judith “Judi” Rodgers McClain. Mac is survived by his only sibling, Colonel Terrance W. McClain, his son, James “Jim” Ingram McClain, and his three grandchildren, Dillon McClain, Mallory McClain Walden, and Molly McClain. Before starting his career in the U.S. Army, Mac graduated from the Citadel in 1954. Mac was commissioned into the Army at 22, later completing Ranger School to become a U.S. Army Ranger, and continued to serve for 20 years. Mac was awarded several military decorations including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with five Clusters, Vietnamese TNG Medal, General Staff Badge, Parachute Badge, Pathfinders’ Badge, Vietnamese Ranger Badge, and Expert Infantry Badge. After completing his service in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam, Mac retired from the Army in 1974. Mac held several esteemed positions upon his military retirement to continue his career of supporting his country and the causes he loved. Mac was the Director of Army Instruction for the EBR School Board, a sales representative at Southwest Utilities and BellSouth, an Intel Specialist for the Baton Rouge City Police Department, and a firearm safety specialist at Jim’s Firearms. Upon retiring, Mac devoted his time to his family and caring for his beloved pets. Those who had the honor and pleasure of knowing Mac knew he loved those around him deeply and those around him loved his quick wit and ability to make everyone smile and laugh. The McClain family wishes to thank all those who care for and have cared for both Richard and Judi, especially Ms. Rebecca Williams, a dear family friend who has become family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Folds of Honor in the name of Lieutenant Colonel Richard “Mac” Alfred McClain. A military burial is to be held at Barrancas National Cemetery in his honor on March 4, 2023, at 9:30 am.
