Harris Jr. Raymond Linwood Harris Jr., 80, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Alice Quinlan Harris. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. EDT Saturday, March 31, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with Monsignor John V. O’Sullivan officiating. The family will also receive visitors at their home from 6 to 8 p.m. EDT Friday, March 30. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Michael Quinlan Brain Tumor Foundation, P.O. Box 5754, Louisville, KY 40255, or to a favorite charity. Beggs Funeral Home (850-492-2929) is handling arrangements. Ray was born in Miami and graduated from Miami Edison High School. He enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday In 1944 and served on the U.S.S. Upshur during World War II. He graduated from The Citadel in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering and was a licensed professional engineer in the state of Florida. His work took him to Peru and Iceland, and he worked in both the Atlas and Saturn missile programs. In 1970 he began work with the Florida Department of Transportation from which he retired In 1993. Ray remained a consultant with DOT, where his encyclopedic knowledge earned him the sobriquet The Walking Archive. He used his remarkable mechanical creativity and boundless energy to help many friends and acquaintances in countless ways. Ray is also survived by his children, Stephen (and wife Deborrah) of Tallahassee, Allison (and husband Scott Abbott) of Los Angeles, Jeffrey (and wife Deborah) of Columbia, S.C., and Sarah (and husband Tigger Gray) of Tallahassee; a sister, Anna Alley of Plantation; two nieces, Kathy Elmore of Plantation and Jayne Wode of Tallahassee; and a nephew, Norman Alley of Coral Gables. He was Papa to Jon, Kate, Charles, Elias, David, Brian, Max, George, Eva, Caroline and Harrison
