Raymond Holmes Young, 92, of Charleston, passed away peacefully at his home on August 31, 2021. Ray grew up on Colonial Lake, where he enjoyed his rowboat. He attended Craft School and played baseball, basketball, and football at Charleston High School. Ray was granted an athletic scholarship to The Citadel, where he played football and captained the basketball team. He graduated from The Citadel in 1950 and kept up with many friends and alumni throughout his life. In 1953, Ray married the former Betty Minus of Columbia and Charleston. He spent most of his career at wholesale appliance distributor, The Gas Engine & Electric Company, working with his father-in-law, Paul Minus. After retiring and selling the company, Ray joined The Brumley Company in Commercial Real Estate. Ray was an Elder at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church and served on its Session and several Search Committees. An avid golfer and tennis player, Ray was a member of The Rascals golf group at the Country Club of Charleston and played there weekly for over fifty years. He was also an active and long-time member of the Charleston Rotary Club. A devoted and attentive husband and father, Ray was the quintessential gentlemen, showing kindness, humility, and appreciation to all. He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Sharon Ward (David) of Charleston and Sandra Schmid (Jim) of Columbia; grandchildren, Ben (Lauren), Loring, and Caroline Ward: and great-granddaughter, Audrey Ward. A memorial service will be held at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 4:00 PM.
