It is with deep love and gratitude that we remember Dr. Ralph Nathan Bloch-beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and patriarch-who passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on August 24, 2025, in Laguna Woods, California.
Ralph’s life was one of courage, brilliance, laughter, and generosity. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1929, he grew up with a sharp wit, endless curiosity, and an unshakable sense of adventure. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from The Citadel in South Carolina, a Master’s in Public Health from Columbia University, and a doctorate in medicine from New York Medical College, ultimately shaping a career as a pioneering orthopedic surgeon. Among his many accomplishments, Ralph was one of the early American physicians to perform total hip replacements, traveling to Europe to study the procedure and bringing that life-changing innovation back to his patients.
A proud veteran of the Korean War, Ralph served his country with honor and courage. Afterward, he poured his energy into both his medical career and his family, instilling in his children the values of honesty, integrity, generosity, and kindness. His love for learning and teaching extended far beyond the operating room-he was a trusted advisor, confidant, and friend to many.
Throughout his life, Ralph lived extended periods of time in New York City, Paramus NJ, Denver Colorado, and Orange County California.
Ralph lived life to the fullest, never shying away from an adventure. He was an avid skier, relishing trips to the Alps in Davos, France, and Austria; a passionate scuba diver and fisherman who loved the ocean’s depths as much as the mountain slopes; and an enthusiastic horseback rider who treasured family vacations to dude ranches. He and his family built memories across the world, embracing travel, culture, and the joy of new experiences.
Ralph also had a gift for bringing people together. He was the life of the party, an entertainer with a booming laugh and a knack for storytelling. Whether sharing a joke at a family gathering, speaking at a professional event, or raising a glass with friends, Ralph’s presence lit up every room. He loved the theater and the arts, celebrated life with gusto, and gave generously-always putting others before himself.
Above all, Ralph was deeply devoted to his family. His love and wisdom shaped generations, and his presence will forever be felt in the lives of those he touched.
