Ralph “Bud” Powell, 76, passed away June 10, 2010. Mr. Powell moved to Jacksonville 8 years ago from West Palm Beach after having lived in Hilton Head and prior to that Philadelphia for 20 years. Bud Powell began his career as an officer in the Army having graduated with the Citadel in 1955. After leaving the Army, Mr. Powell worked as a civil engineer eventually becoming a principal in a major Florida engineering firm. As someone who always looked for a challenge, Bud Powell left his very successful engineering practice and entered the Law School of the University of Florida College of Law. While attending the law school he worked as an engineer assisting in the construction of the new law school building. Upon graduation, Mr. Powell began his career as an attorney in Philadelphia, initially serving as general counsel for a number of construction trade associations. In 1977 Bud Powell founded the law firm that still bears his name where he quickly became the pre-eminent attorney for representation of architects and engineers in the region. Although he retired from the active practice of law in 1989, he continued to be highly regarded as an expert with regard to legal issues related to the design professions and construction. Survivors include his wife, Sharon; and two sons, Todd Powell and wife Tracy, and Randy Powell. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2010, at One Ocean Resort, One Ocean Blvd, Atlantic Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jacksonville Humane Society. Arrangements are by Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach. Tags: 1955
