Roy Lee Cashwell Jr., of Greenville, entered into eternal rest on September 16, 2016, after a brave battle fighting cancer. Lee was born on May 19, 1941, in Greenville, SC, to the late Roy Lee Cashwell, MD, and the late Mary Sullivan West Cashwell. He grew up in Greenville and graduated from Greenville High School in 1958. Following high school, Lee attended The Citadel and graduated from Wofford College in 1962 where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Lee remained a loyal Terrier fan throughout his life. He was instrumental in the creation of the Cashwell Family Endowment Scholarship Fund at Wofford College. After graduating from Wofford where he was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), Lee was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army, serving his country in Germany with the Army Security Agency for three years. After serving in the Army, Lee joined Liberty Mutual Insurance. His entire business career was in the insurance industry. He was an active member of the Sertoma Club of Greenville. It was with the Sertoma Club that Lee proudly volunteered with the annual Christmas tree fundraiser. The Greenville News published an article about Lee’s unwavering devotion to the Christmas tree program. Lee would wrap up his Thanksgiving celebrations early, no matter where they were, in order to be at the Christmas tree lot as soon as it opened on the day after Thanksgiving. Lee was a hunter throughout his life, having learned to hunt at an early age from his father. As a child, Lee also spent time at his family’s property outside of Fayetteville, North Carolina. He loved traveling with his family and attending Clemson football games. Lee gained peace and strength spending as much time as possible at his family’s property in the mountains of North Carolina. Lee loved his time at Beech Mountain with family and friends. Lee is survived by his daughter, Ashley H. Cashwell: his son, Wesley Quinton Cashwell, Sr.; (Melanie Lea); his grandchildren, Wesley Quinton Cashwell, Jr., and Emilee Claire Cashwell, all of Racine, Wisconsin; and his sister Rebecca Cashwell Johnson (William H.), nieces Mary Perrin O’Kelley (G. Hamlin III), Elizabeth West Johnson, Margaret Sullivan Kunes (David H.), and three great-nieces, all of Charleston, South Carolina. On Saturday, October 8, 2016 a private interment service will be at Springwood Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend a 2:00 p.m. memorial service at St. Matthew United Methodist Church, 701 Cleveland Street.
