Porcher Douglas Ancrum, age 82 of Lake Wylie, SC, died Wednesday April 25, 2012, at Carolinas Medical Center, Pineville, NC. Porcher, who was better known as ‘Tunk’ to his friends and was the third of four generations in his family to bear the nickname, was born in Spartanburg, SC on April 2, 1930. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Simonds Ancrum and Marie Dean Ancrum, his sister, Harriet Ancrum Ballenger, and his nephew Ancrum Dean Ballenger. Tunk attended the Spartanburg schools and The Citadel, graduating in 1951 with a BS degree and a commission in the United States Army. He earned the Combat Infantryman’s Badge in Korea. After their marriage in 1954, Tunk and Bet lived in Roanoke Virginia, moving to Charlotte in 1958 where he was a stockbroker until his retirement. Tunk was an exceptionally kind and caring man who was admired and loved by those who knew him, and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Betsy Shepherd Ancrum, two sons Andrew Porcher Ancrum of Lake Wylie, Ernest Shepherd Ancrum (Martha) of Monroe, NC, two grandsons Douglas Brisbane Turner Ancrum (Meg) of Lake Wylie, SC and William Wheeler Ancrum of Monroe, NC. He is also survived by two nephews, Dr. Clarence Eugene Ballenger (Marian) and Norwood Porcher Ballenger, two nieces Haidee Ballenger Courson (Gardner) and Elizabeth Ballenger Wise,and first cousins Thomas Douglas Ancrum and Louise Ancrum Steffens. He loved them all dearly. Memorial service will be held at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, 4820 Charlotte Hwy., Lake Wylie, SC on Saturday April 28 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. B. Clarisse Schroeder officiation. Visitation will be an hour before the service. Tags: 1951
