Peter Christian Einselen died on Thursday, July 15, 2021, in St. Augustine, Florida. Born August 30, 1939, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Alice Spencer Einselen and Albert Garfield Einselen, Jr. He attended Central High School until moving with his family to Rancocas Woods, New Jersey, where he graduated from Moorestown High School. He then attended The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.
Graduating from The Citadel in 1961, he headed west for graduate school at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), until called into active duty by the United States Army during the Berlin Crisis. He and his new wife, Billie Rose Paxton of Greenville, Kentucky, whom he met at UCLA, returned east to begin his military career as a finance officer. His first assignment, Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, was followed by a year in Taegu, South Korea, and then tours at the Presidio of San Francisco; Fort Dix, New Jersey; Fort Richardson, Alaska, where he kept and raced a sled dog team; Fort Monroe; a year in Long Binh, South Vietnam; and back to Fort Monroe, where he separated from the military in 1972. Retaining his reserve military status, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Settling with his family in Hampton, Peter began work as a stockbroker at Paine Webber Jackson & Curtis in Newport News. He was active in the community, especially with the Elizabeth Lakes Civic Association and St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and member of the vestry. He continued in the brokerage business for the next 40 years with firms in Norfolk and Richmond, although moving to St. Augustine with his second wife, the late Barbara Rice, in 1995. He also enjoyed his summer home in Averill, Vermont, until last year.
Surviving Peter are his daughter, Evelyn Einselen Yu and her husband, Ritchie, of St. Augustine; his son, Christian Paxton Einselen; and grandsons, Dominic Christian Einselen, Ivan Montigaud Einselen, and Maxim Pool Einselen, all of Staunton. Also surviving him are his sister, Lois Einselen Berthoud and her husband, John, of Naperville, Illinois. Additional survivors are his stepchildren, Dana Lynn Rice of Seattle, Washington; Steven O’Hara Rice of Oviedo, Florida; and Gregory James Rice of Jacksonville, Florida.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
