The Citadel Alumni Association Contributes to Scholarships

The Citadel Alumni Association capped off a banner year of giving at its annual membership meeting. The Association will contribute $900,000 to support college operations, CAA legacy cadet and need-based scholarships, and enhance The Citadel’s Service to Country Tuition Scholarships and National Service Room and Board Scholarships for ROTC cadets.

LTG Thomas H. Todd III, USA, Ret., '89

Todd is the owner of Noble Tech Strategies, advising companies on advancing values-based technology in support of U.S. national security. In September 2023, he joined the Board of Directors of Airbus U.S. Space & Defense.

He retired from the U.S. Army after serving as Deputy Commanding General for Acquisition and Systems, Army Futures Command, where he acted as Chief Innovation Officer, leading technology integration and capability development across Army research laboratories and centers.

A career Army Aviator, his 34-year career combined aviation command with leadership in acquisition, modernization, and R&D. Key assignments included:

Special Assistant for Acquisition and Systems Management to the Commanding General, U.S. Army Materiel Command
Program Executive Officer for Army Aviation
Deputy Commanding General, Research, Development and Engineering Command
Senior Commander, Natick Soldier Systems Center
Modernization Advisor, Army Capabilities Integration Center

Todd led Army and Joint programs, delivering advanced capabilities to Soldiers, joint services, other agencies, and 60+ allied nations. He contributed to programs including the CH-47F, H-60M/V, AH-64E, MQ-1C Gray Eagle ER, UH-72 Lakota, EMARSS-E, and Black Hawk Aircrew Trainer. His joint assignments included Defense Contract Management Agency Special Programs Multi-Service Team and Chief of Contracts for Joint Task Force Bravo, Honduras. Operational service included Korea and Fort Hood, TX.

He is an honor graduate of Army Initial Entry Rotary Wing training, the Kiowa and Black Hawk Maintenance Test Pilot courses, and holds M.S. degrees in Contract Management (Florida Institute of Technology) and Strategic Studies (U.S. Air War College).

A Senior Army Aviator and Air Assault graduate, he is rated in the UH-1 Iroquois, OH-58 A/C Kiowa, UH-60 A/L/M Black Hawk, and CH-47 D/F Chinook helicopters.

  • Richard H. Kellahan, Sr., The Citadel Class of 1944, of Kingstree, was freed from a German prisoner-of-war camp when Russians liberated Kellahan’s camp on April 21, 1945,. He rode in a truck convoy to the Elbe River before ending at a hospital near Nancy, France. There he was put on a train to the French coast and later shipped from Le Havre to New York.

  • This weekend, April 24 and April 25, Morris Robinson, ‘91, will perform with The Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus, directed by Nicholas Quardokus, for an uplifting program featuring Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, a massive work with a stunning chorus-charged grand finale.

  • On April 18, 1942, the Doolittle Raid marked the first U.S. bomber mission against Japan launched from an aircraft carrier. Among the airmen was then-Lieutenant Horace E. Crouch, Class of 1940, of The Citadel, who later retired as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force.

Trained in multiple crew roles, Crouch served as a key member of his B-25 crew, helping guide the aircraft to its target in Tokyo. With no way to return, he parachuted into China and, with the help of Chinese civilians and guerrillas, evaded capture.

He continued his service in the China-Burma-India Theater, flew additional combat missions, and later served in the Korean War before retiring in 1962. Following his military career, he spent 25 years teaching mathematics in Columbia.
