Norman T. Raynal, of Spring Hill, Florida, passed on February 25th, 2024. Mr. Raynal was born and raised in White Plains, NY and spent much of his youth involved in Boy Scout activities around the New England area. He graduated from The Citadel, in Charleston SC in 1962 with a BA in Business Administration and was then commissioned into the US Army as an Infantry Officer. Mr. Raynal served two tours in the Republic of South Vietnam both as an Advisor to South Vietnamese forces and later as a member of the 101st Airborne Division. Leaving military service as a Major, he began a decades-long career as a civil servant in Germany working for several Federal agencies where he served as a budget analyst and program supervisor. In his past time, Mr. Raynal was an avid participant in the popular German past time of Volksmarching, and he completed countless marches across Europe eventually walking thousands of kilometers and qualifying for many awards from the International Federation of Popular Sports. At the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Mr. Raynal volunteered and raised money for the Fischer House near Ramstein, Germany that provided free lodging for families of wounded military personnel who were undergoing medical treatment. This spirit of volunteerism stayed with him as he re-located to Florida in 2015. While there, he gave selflessly of his time to community organizations, the Veteran’s Administration, and his local hospital. A lover of books, military history, coin collecting, genealogy, and travel, his passions took him from the Pyramids of Egypt to the cockpit of a small airplane for flying lessons at the tender young age of 75. Norm, as everyone knew him, was truly in his zone on his lanai overlooking his pool where he loved to gather with friends, family, and his beloved cats Molly and Teeter. Mr. Raynal was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elie Raynal, his brother-in-law Mr. Richard Rearwin, and Ms. Lyn Kiekow. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Joeanna Rearwin, of Concord MA, his son, LTC (USA-Ret) Scott Raynal (and Deb) of Kansas City, MO, a niece, Mrs. Elizabeth Chambers (and Jeff) of Littleton, MA, nephews Mr. Matthew Rearwin of Sutton, MA, and Dr. David Rearwin of Westminster, CA as well as five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. An informal Drop By/Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, April 6th, 2024, from 2-4pm in the Silverthorne Club House, Spring Hill FL. Inurnment to follow later this year at The Citadel Columbarium on the campus of The Citadel in Charleston, SC.
