Norman Pate Prosser, 66, of Summerville, died suddenly in his home Tuesday, October 25, 2016. Norman was born June 29, 1950 in Johnsonville to Edith Marie Bockhardt and Pate Phillip Prosser. Baptised and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in the Maryville area of Georgetown, he spent his youth surfing at the Pawleys Island Pier. Norman was a Winyah High School Graduate, Class of 1968. He attended The Citadel, R- Company, Class of 1972, where he rowed on the Crew Team and earned a BS in Business Administration. Soon after graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Gloria Bessinger. Norman served from 1972 – 1980 in the USAF as Captain, a rated Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO) during the Viet Nam War in the Strategic Air Command on the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress Bomber. Capt. Prosser served as EWO – Standboard Instructor on the B-52 prior to his transfer to SAC Headquarters to work in the highly classified Computer Programmer Division. Upon his honorable discharge in 1980, Norman worked as a computer programmer at The Citadel and several departments at the Naval Shipyard (DoD). When the Shipyard closed, Norman became the Web Master at Fort Jackson (DoD); Systems Information Management. He then returned to work for DoS: Charleston Financial Center retiring in 2005. He and Gloria then relocated to Summerville from Charleston where they found the home of their dreams. During his adult years, Norman relentlessly researched the family’s ancestry, visiting many near and distant relatives to find old family photos and information, which he stored both digitally and “hard copy” in his meticulous and precise manner. He was a wonderful repairman, known as the best “fixer” in the family. Norman was a computer guru often using a second language that others found difficult to comprehend; whenever he talked “computer speak”. He loved to share and hear a good story for which he always had a strong, hearty laugh. Norman and Gloria during their more than 44 years of marriage have been loyal supporters of Special Olympics, Catholic Charities, St. Vincent DePaul Society, and long time members of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews. He is survived by his wife and one son, Christopher Norman Prosser of Ohio; his parents and two sisters; Doreatha P. Pierce (Sam) of Georgetown and Kasandra P. Doughty (Henry) of Charleston; a sister-in-law, Linda Bessinger; and brothers-in-law; James Bessinger (Carol) and Charles D.
