Nicolas George Latto was born in Charleston in 1924, the son of George and Stamo Latto. He graduated from Charleston High, attended Furman University and then The Citadel as a veteran student after having served in the US Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He was general manager and stockholder of the family-owned Canada Dry Bottling Company. When the business was sold in 1967, he entered the financial services industry. He was president of Latto and Associates, a local insurance and investment brokerage. Mr. Latto served on the executive committee of the Charleston Development Board, and as vice president of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce and chairman of various committees. In 1960, he was elected president of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. He co-produced the first production of “Porgy and Bess” which played during the Charleston Tri-Centennial celebration in 1970. He served n the board of the Community Concert Association, as a consultant of SCORE (Service Corporation of Retired Executives), and was a longtime member of Sertoma. He was a lifetime member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church where he served on the Parish Council, as a Sunday school teacher, in the St. Luke Adult Group, and as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 30. He was founder and chairman of the Holy Trinity Endowment Fund. After age 50, he became a competitive swimmer in the Masters Swimmers Programs winning many medals, and going on to qualify and compete at the Senior Olympics. Joanna Demos Latto, his wife of 62 years, survives him. His daughter Lydia and her husband Allen Mims live in Memphis, TN. Daughters Elaine Latto and Catherine Latto reside in Charleston, SC and granddaughter Alexandra Mims of Memphis, TN. He is predeceased by his sisters Teresa Cotsirilos and Urania Alissandratos and brother Reverend Dennis Latto. The family will receive friends at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Friday December 4, 2009 between eleven and one o’clock with the Trisagion service at one o’clock.
