Nick William Nickas, 82, of Columbia, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012. Born November 28, 1929, in Columbia, he was the son of the late William Nick and Fotika Mavrides Nickas. He was an active member of The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church where he served on the Parish Board, Church Committees and was president of the Parish Council. He was a 1951 graduate of The Citadel as a Civil Engineer. Upon graduation he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he was deployed to the Korean conflict. Mr. Nickas was an engineer in the construction industry for many years. He is survived by his wife, Tina Trakas Nickas; sons and daughters-in-law, William N. Nickas (Teresa) of Tallahassee, FL, and Sam N. Nickas (Billie Jean) of Columbia; grandchildren he was very proud of, Caroline, Olivia, Gracie and Andy; brother, George W. Nickas (Mary) of Columbia; sister, Mary N. Mandanis (Dr. Nicholas, deceased); and many nieces and nephews. Service will be held at noon Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Trisagian Prayers will be recited at 6 p.m. Tuesday with visitation following until 8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Tags: 1951
