- Hartzog completed a remarkable 35 year career of military service in 1998, as Commanding General, US Army Training and Doctrine Command. Hartzog also commanded the 1st Infantry Division and the United States Army South. A combat veteran of 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, Hartzog's military awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Soldier's Medal, the Bronze Star with V Device and Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
- Hartzog was regarded as one of the worlds leading experts in the use and maintenance of operational military systems. His leadership paved the way for the US Army to downsize from Cold War structures into a smaller, quicker, more lethal fighting force in which information-age technology, computers and satellites combine with weaponry to fight future battles.
- After retiring from the Army, Hartzog was named President and CEO of Burdeshaw Associates Ltd., a major industrial and defense consulting firm.
