- Wakefield began his distinguished 34 year Army career upon graduation from The Citadel in 1960. From 1987-1988, Wakefield was the head of the Combat Service Support Directorate at the US Army Training & Doctrine Command, Fort Monroe, Virginia. He served as Commanding General, US Army Transportation Center and School, Fort Eustis, Virginia, from 1989 to 1992, and was Commanding General, United States Army Combined Arms Support Command, Fort Lee, Virginia until his retirement in 1994.
- Wakefield served with the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, 1967. His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star.
