- General Shuler was commander of the Strategic Air Command's Eighth Air Force, Barksdale Air Force Base, responsible for Strategic Air Command operations in the eastern half of the United States, Europe and the Middle East. It comprises about half of SAC's long-range force of manned bombers, tankers and intercontinental ballistic missiles.
- General Shuler served as both a B-52 bomber pilot and an F-4C fighter pilot flying a combat tour at Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam with the 12th Tactical Fighter Wing. During his career he commanded two squadrons, two bombardment wings, two air divisions and the Eighth Air Force during operations Just Cause & Desert Shield/Storm. He logged 7,650 flying hours, including 225.7 combat hours.
- General Shuler earned an MS in Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in June 1967. After retiring from the Air Force, in 1991, he served as the Chairman of the Board & CEO of The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum located near Savannah, GA. from 1992 to 2004. His leadership was instrumental in the fund raising, construction and initial operation of the museum. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Aerospace Science from The Citadel in 2014.
