- Farris served as a battalion commander and executive officer of the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam, and commanded U.S. Forces during the invasion of Grenada in 1984. He commanded the U.S. Army 2nd Infantry Division in Korea, served as Chief of Staff of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, and Deputy Commander-In-Chief, U.S. Pacific Command, Hawaii. Farris retired from the Army in 1991.
- Farris was a graduate of the U.S. Army Ranger and Airborne schools. His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, 3 awards of the Legion of Merit and a Purple Heart.
