- Hardee attended The Citadel for nearly three years before enlisting in U.S. Army for service in World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary heroism in combat on 9 August 1944, while serving with the 11th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division.
- A barracks at the US Army Infantry Center at Ft. Benning, Ga. is named in Hardee's honorwith the following plaque: "because it was hoped that his heroism and sacrifice would serve as a goal to infantrymen everywhere."
