- U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 1977-1981.
- West served in the US Army as an intelligence officer during World War II. He graduated from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1948, and was elected to the SC State Senate from 1955-1966. He served as Lt. Governor in SC from 1967-1970.
