- Hollings served as US Senator from South Carolina from 1966-2005. He became nationally known for his advocacy of education and reducing poverty.
- During World War II, Hollings served as an artillery officer in the US Army, in North Africa and European campaigns. After military service, Hollings earned a law degree from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1947, and practiced law in Charleston. He was elected to the SC House of Representatives from 1949-1954, Lt. Gov. from 1954-1959. and Governor of SC 1959-1963, As governor, Hollings is credited with establishing the state’s technical education system. He also increased teacher salaries statewide and expanded the State Development Board.
- Hollings was a Candidate for the Democratic Party's Presidential nomination in 1984.
