- Westmoreland entered The Citadel in 1932, and completed his freshman year before being appointed to and graduating from the USMA in 1936.
- Westmoreland served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam and was appointed Superintendent of USMA in 1960.
- Westmoreland is best known as Commander of U.S. forces in Vietnam 1965-1968. Time Magazine named Westmoreland its Man of the Year in 1965.
- Westmoreland was appointed Chief of Staff, U. S. Army 1968-1972.
- Westmoreland's father James R. Westmoreland Class of 1900, was Chairman Emeritus of The Citadel Board of Visitors serving for 32 years, and is on The Citadel Alumni Association's "Notable Alumni List."
