- Land was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross while serving with the 84th Bombardment Squadron, 47th Bombardment Group (Light), 12th Air Force, for "extraordinary heroism" against German forces 30 March 1943, during a bombing mission in Tunisia, North Africa. Although shot down and wounded behind enemy lines, he was rescued.
- Upon recovery Land returned to duty and was shot down again on his next mission and listed as Killed in Action over La Fauconnerie, Tunisia, North Africa 20 April 1943. He is buried at the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial in Carthage, Tunis, Tunisia in Plot A, Row 9, Grave 4.
