- Dolvin attended The Citadel from 1933-1935 before being appointed to and graduating from the USMA in 1939.
- Dovin is one of the most highly decorated military officers of either The Citadel or USMA, serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
- He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, 4 Silver Stars, Bronze Star with V device, and 3 Purple hearts, among numerous other combat decorations. Dolvin received the DSC for extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy in Korea from 25 through 27 May 1951.
