- Wooten was a World War II fighter pilot and is one of The Citadel's most highly decorated alumni. He flew over 200 combat missions in 1943 & 1944, in the European theater and North Africa and is credited with 6 aerial victories.
- Wooten was shot down twice, the second time, on 4 Oct 1944, when he was captured and held as a POW by the Germans until liberated by allied troops on 6 March 1945.
- Wooten earned 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 22 Air Medals and 2 Purple Hearts.
- Named Postmaster of Charleston in 1961 by President Kennedy, the Arnold Air Society chapter at The Citadel is named in his honor.
