William McCorkle

- McCorkle was a decorated Navy chaplain of WWII. Serving as a Navy chaplain with the Marine Corps, he was wounded at Bougainville in the South Pacific, for which he received the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He received a Bronze Star for action in 1944 on Guam
- After the World War II, he became Chaplain of the Brigade of Midshipmen at USNA, Annapolis, Md
- McCorkle was Moderator, the highest elected position, of the Southern Presbyterian Church (1963). He also was Pastor of several large Presbyterian congregations
