  • The SCMA (now The Citadel) was established by the SC Legislature on December 20, 1842, and C.C. Tew was a member of the first class to be admitted on March 20, January 1843.
  • 1st Honor Graduate of the Class of 1846. 
  • Profesor, Citadel Academy 1846-1852.
  • 1st President of The Association of Graduates in 1852.  The Association is reportedly the first alumni association organized by graduates of a public college or university in the US.
  • Commandant of Cadets 1853-1857.
  • Superintendent, Arsenal Academy 1857-1859.
  • Founded Hillsborough Military Academy, Hillsborough, NC 1859.
  • During the Civil War, Tew was commissioned as a colonel in the 2d NC State Troops attached to BG Anderson's Army of Northern Virginia, and took part in the Peninsula Campaign, Northern Virginia Campaign, and Maryland Campaign.
  • Killed-in-action at the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862, on the eve of his promotion to Brigadier General.  
  • Some of Tew's personal effects were taken from his body by Union troops at Antietam.  In 1874, Tew's drinking cup was returned to his family by J.W.Bean of the 5th NH Infantry.  In 2015 Tew's sword was returned to The Citadel, by the 33d Signal Regiment of the Canadian Army.  The sword had been given to the Regiment by a New York resident as gift in 1963.  Upon learning of its significance, the Regiment returned the sword to The Citadel on September 16, 2015, 153 years to the day after it was taken from him at Antietam.
