Joseph D. Shine

Hometown: Charleston, SC
- After graduating from The Citadel in 1971, Shine earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and later an MBA from Southern Illinois University. He was a commissioned officer in the US Air Force, and after graduating from law school, served in the Office of General Counsel (Honors Program) at the Pentagon.
- After military service, Shine served as Director of Ethics for the U.S. General Services Administration. In 1987, he was appointed Chief Deputy Attorney General in South Carolina, and later served as General Counsel to the SC State Budget and Control Board. At the time of his death in 2003, Shine was serving as General Counsel to Westinghouse Savannah River Company in Aiken, SC.
- Shine was a past president of the SC Bar Association Foundation, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Centers for Equal Justice, and a member of the Board of Directors of The Citadel Foundation. Mr. Shine was the recipient of the Order of the Palmetto in 1995, the Jonathan Jasper Wright Award in 2002 and many other awards and honors throughout his career. In 2003, Shine was appointed by the Governor of SC to The Citadel Board of Visitors, but passed away before he could take office.
