  • Awarded both the Distinguished Service Cross and Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism while serving as a 1st Lt., with the Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A. E. F., in action at Chateau-Thierry, France, 6 June 1918.  Hope displayed coolness and courage in directing his platoon in the attack on enemy positions during which he was severely wounded. He refused medical attention until others received theirs first, nearly costing him his life.
  • Hope also received the French Croix de Guerre for his actions as a platoon commander in successfully repulsing separate enemy raids on his position on 20 April 1918.
