- Cogswell was warded both the Distinguished Service Cross and Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 80th Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action in the bombardment of La Cense Farm, France, June 6, 1918.
- Cogswell was first wounded on June 3d, 1918, but refused to return to the rear, being unwilling to leave his men. Cogswell handled his platoon with marked bravery and skill in an assault on a formidable machine-gun position until seriously wounded on June 6, 1918.
