- In 2018, General Walters became the 20th President of The Citadel.
- Prior to his retirement from the Marine Corps, General Walters served as the 34th Assistant Commandant of the US Marine Corps (2016 - 2018).
- General Walters was designated a Naval Aviator in March 1981. A USMC aviator and former member of the Navy Test Pilot School, his operational commands and assignments cover all positions in marine aviation up to and including command of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. He served in support of Operation Earnest Will in the Persian Gulf in 1987, commanded 2d Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2010; and was appointed Assistant Commandant for Programs and Resources, HQ USMC in 2015.
- General Walters military awards include the Navy Distinguished Service Medal with one gold award star, Defense Superior Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit with one award star.
