- Mood was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously for extraordinary heroism during action against German forces on July 19, 1918, near Soissons, France in the same battle that 1Lt John Holmes, Class of 1915, gave his life. Capt. Mood voluntarily exposed himself to German fire repeatedly in order to get information and direct operations. He was killed leading a battalion in attack.
