- Considered among the nations most respected Civil Engineers, his career includes research and leadership positions at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station, where he served as director of the Geotechnical Laboratory for nearly 20 years prior to his retirement in 2000.
- Marcuson has received 5 national awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers, including its oldest & highest award, the Norman Medal, civil engineering’s oldest honor. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1996, and is the only person to be named Army Corps of Engineers "Engineer of the Year" two times. He served as President of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2007.
- Marcuson earned an M.S. from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University, in civil engineering.
