- Holmes was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously for extraordinary heroism while in action against German forces near Soissons, France, July 18-19, 1918. After bravely leading his company in three attacks in two days, CPT Holmes was killed-in-action during a fourth attack while charging a German machine-gun position.
