Richard G. White

Hometown: Marion, SC
- White attended The Citadel for two years, 1902-1904, and was honorably discharged due to lack of funds to continue his education. He never attended another college. He volunteered for service during WWI, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action near Soissons, France, July 18, 1918. As a first lieutenant, 16th Infantry, White led his platoon through intense machine-gun and artillery fire, destroying machine guns that were causing heavy losses on an exposed flank. White was severely wounded twice, but remained in command of his platoon during the action.
- After the war, White became Treasurer of the City of Charleston.
- White's father was Maj J. B. White, Superintendent of The Citadel, 1861-1862, and in command of the Battalion of State Cadets from the South Carolina Military Academy during their historic engagement with Union forces at Tulifinny Creek December 7-9, 1864.
