Defended Pearl Harbor 7 Dec 1941. He earned the Navy Cross on 10 May 1945 at Okinawa when the advance of the regiment was checked by a strong Japaneese force. Alone, he reconned an observation post, brought in several defenders and despite heavy casualties at the post from intense mortar and small-arms fire, he continued to man it and report information vital to the capture of the desperately defended Dakeshi Bridge.
