- After graduating from The Citadel, Law taught history at King's Mountain Military Academy (founded by Citadel graduates Asbury Coward and Micah Jenkins) from 1858-1860.
- In 1860, Law founded Tuskegee Military Academy, Tuskegee, Alabama.
- During the Civil War, Law joined the CSA as a captain in the 4th Alabama Infantry, and rose quickly in rank to brigadier general distinguishing himself in several battles. Law participated in some of the most fearsome battles of the Civil War, including the First Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Second Battle of Bull Run, Gettysburg, Chickamauga and Cold Harbor. His commands included the 4th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Alabama Brigade, Hood's Division (temporary), Butler's Calvary Brigade and Butler's Cavalry Division.
- Promoted to major general March 20, 1865, on the recommendation of Generals Johnston and Hampton, too late to be confirmed by the Confederate Congress as the Confederate capital in Richmond, Va., fell to Union forces on April 2, 1865.
- After the war, Law played a key role in the foundation of public education in Florida. He founded the South Florida Military College in 1895, was a Trustee of the Summerlin Institute in Bartow, Florida, and a member of the Polk County Board of Education.
- Law Barracks at The Citadel is named in his honor.
