William D. Workman, Jr

Editor of The State newspaper from 1966-1972, he played a pivotal role in leading the emergence of the Republican Party in SC. The Republican Party's nominee for U.S. Senate in 1962 and for Governor in 1982, he lost close elections each time, but his campaigns established the GOP in SC for the first time in over 100 years. Author of 8 books all pertaining to the south and its culture. Citadel roommate of Robert Hitt, 1935 (was editor of Charleston Post at the same time).
