- Founded Kings Mt. Military Academy with classmate Asbury Coward (1855-1861)
- At the outbreak of the Civil War, Jenkins recruited a company of the 5th South Carolina Infantry Regiment and was elected as colonel on April 13, 1861. Considered one of the Civil War's "boy generals," Jenkins was well liked by his men and superior officers. He was just 26 years old when he was promoted to brigadier general on July 22, 1862. Jenkins distinguished himself in numerous battles, including the First Battle of Bull Run, Seven Pines, Second Battle of Bull Run, Chickamauga, the Knoxville Campaign and the Battle of the Wilderness. During the Battle of the Wilderness, Jenkins was riding with Lt. Gen. Longstreet when both were struck down by friendly fire on May 6, 1864. Longstreet survived, but Jenkins died of his head wound.
- Jenkins Hall, which houses the headquarters of the Department of Defense Reserve Officers Training Corps is named in Jenkin's honor.
