He resigned in June 1862 at the beginning of his 2nd class year and led 37 other resigning cadets into forming the famous company of \Cadet Rangers\ ----- later involved in the largest cavalry battle in the War Between The States at Trevilian Station,Va. View here. Performing heroically in several battle situations he rose quickly from Lt. to Colonel, was wounded three times and tragically died of his wounds three weeks after the war's end.
