The last confederate commander of Fort Sumter. In July 1864, he and the garrison he commanded evacuated the fort for positions on the mainland. View of Civil War Ft Sumter here He was also the last commander of Fort Wagner during the War Between the States. Later he became Commissioner of Streets in Charleston and began the process of paving many of them.
