MAJ Robert M. Sims

Class of 1856

He carried the flag of truce for the confederate forces to Appomattox Court House, then presented the flag to General Custer. That scene of the confederate soldier on horseback(Sims) holding the white banner has been depicted in countless paintings. The signing of documents that ended The War in April 1865 followed. Later, he became S.C. Secretary of State (1877). Sketch of the surrender here.
