Records suggest he was the first of the confederate officers to lead his men into the famous battlefield at Gettysburg in July 1863. There he was severely wounded, taken POW, then later paroled. Having lost his sword arm and at the risk of being executed if re-captured, he nevertheless re-joined his unit and participated in seven additional major battles as a field officer commanding the 14th SC (the 14th SC participated in more battles than any regiment from any state during the war). He was wounded three more times, but never left the battlefield and was present with Lee at Appomattox. A \soldier's soldier\ and hero of all american fighting men. A successful attorney after the war.
