- Gadsden earned a national reputation as a pioneer in the railroad industry, and was a distinguished civil engineer.
- Superintendent of the Charleston and Savannah Railroad, and President of the Atlantic Coast Railroad for 34 years.
- Gadsden had a prominent role in the reopening of The Citadel in 1882, and was Chairman of The Citadel Board of Visitors (1898-1915).
- The Colonel Christopher Schuultz Gadsden Memorial Award is given annually to the “best all-round civil engineering graduate” as selected by the civil engineering faculty.
